3.3 St Ives by the Sea

As part of my work for Illustration 1 Assignment 5: 7 days and Printmaking 1 I had taken a lot of colour photographs as reference material for prints. Looking at images on Shutterstock, they were nearly all high saturation images of sunsets and blue sea and sand. As part of my work for Assignment 2: Shutterscapes, I started to look at the potential of Lightroom and SilverFX for re-working these as Black and White images, adding further photographs from St Ives and Penwith mines from May 2019. I further develop my skills in Lightroom Black and White tonal and colour adjustments, clarity and colour adjustments and different types of gradient and adjustment overlays, and in the first series explore filters in SilverFX.

St Ives Streets

I started to produce a short documentary book of on-line experience of St Ives in the Winter based on a further visit in November 2019.

Pendinas moods

This first set of images are from May 2019 of the view from our campsite on the top of the hill overlooking Pendinas Island and Porthmeor Bay. These were quite stunning – if a bit over the top – in colour. See my Shutterstock image gallery. Inspired by the seascapes of Hiroshi Sugimoto, I wanted to see what effects I could get in Lightroom and also in SilverFX Black and White.

Coast Path

This series was inspired by Fay Godwin’s images of fragility and the contrast between craggy ancient granite rocks and vulnerable plant life – vulnerable to climate as well as the big feet of tourists. This is a theme I want to work on a lot more. Reading also the work of Barbara Hepworth who did many drawings along this coast.

Lelant and Hayle

This series was inspired by Fay Godwin’s Black and White documentary style.

St Ives Barnoon Cemetery

These images could be further developed in colour, contrasting the brown of the lichens and the blue of the sky.
